Article: NFL, Players Say Labor `Deal Is Off'; Team Owners Balk at Free Agency Terms

A tentative deal for labor peace in the National Football League blew up late last night with representatives of the NFL Players Association saying the owners backtracked on free agency after both sides had said last week they had reached a tentative settlement on a new agreement.

"The deal is off, it's all over, they backed away from it," Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players Association told The Washington Post early this morning. "It's amazing to me that when it all finally came down to free agency for the players, they said `no way.' "
