According to "Oman Observer", traditional remedies and cosmetics
containing lead are a key cause of lead poisoning detected in some
Omani children, a senior Health Ministry official said. Addressing a
national training workshop on lead poisoning, Dr Salem al Wahaiby,
Director of Environmental Health & Malaria Eradication, warned that
the herbal remedy 'bint al Dhahab', a traditional potion given to
colicky babies, contains dangerous levels of the toxic heavy metal.
Although banned by the authorities, its use is still reported in some
areas of Oman, he added. The official traced the link between the
herbal remedy and lead poisoning to a study of 25 Omani infants ...
