Hall of Famer Jim Palmer crossed another small threshold toward
an improbable comeback this morning when he stood on a mound and
tossed 15 minutes of free and easy batting practice.
He threw fastballs over the middle of the plate, spun a few
curveballs and even got Bob Melvin to swing and miss on a pitch.
"Write that one down," he yelled. "I may never have another
one."
In many ways it was nothing special, and in many more ways it
proved nothing. Palmer did his job easily and without pain. There
was no way to judge if he has the velocity, control or ability to
still pitch in the majors.
