Late one afternoon, I stepped out onto a ridge in Virginia's
Shenandoah National Park, looking for something wild. I had no
inkling that by the time the weekend was over, I'd feel like Daniel
Boone.
I'm not going to tell you where in the park I was. The place has
always been a reliable refuge from crowds, even on those weekends of
Skyline Drive traffic jams. And I want it to stay that way. I knew
there were bears there. I just hadn't expected to see so many.
I had been walking about an hour when I saw the first one. Most
bears seem only half-there really, momentarily animated parts of a
still landscape. Without exception, they've appeared when I least
expected them. Now, less than 50 ...
