U.S. and allied military forces have come up with a tally of
Iraqi soldiers buried on the battlefield by the allies since the
Persian Gulf War ended Feb. 28, but have declined to release the
figure publicly, according to U.S. officials and Red Cross
representatives.
The information has been provided to Iraq through the
International Committee of the Red Cross, according to Nicholas
Sommer, a spokesman for the relief agency in Geneva. The First
Geneva Convention, which governs combat protocol, requires warring
nations to report what they can to each other about the identities
of those killed in battle.
The undisclosed estimate necessarily represents only a portion
