THE NEW St Pancras proves many things. For example, that Britain
can actually pull off enormous engineering projects. That, if you
set your budgets high enough and your programme long enough, and
then stick to them, no one says you are too expensive or slow.
That big, elaborate listed buildings can be converted to modern
uses.
It also proves beyond reasonable doubt that the biggest
force in the shaping of cities is shopping. I don't want to
downplay the achievement of the people who got the high-speed rail
lines into the greatest of the Victorian railway stations, and
managed to put five stations in one complex (Eurostar, Thameslink,
