World drive for biofuel pushes up food inflation, says S. African official

JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The big international drive for biofuel is pushing up world food prices, affecting the poor most significantly, a South African official said on Tuesday.

The price of grain, a major source of biofuel that is considered to be cleaner than fossil fuels, has risen sharply overthe past year, National Treasury director-general Lesetja Kganyagosaid in Cape Town on Tuesday.

"Food prices are driven on a global basis partly as a result ofthis big drive towards biofuel, which is making us compete with our cars for food," he was quoted as saying by the SAPA news agency.
