Those of us who lived through the John Barbirolli era with the Halle used to choke back tears as the human soul was carried with tenderness to its final resting place at the close of Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius.

Nowadays, we search in vain for performances at that level of inspiration, and hearts sank at the sight of the Manchester Camerata's meagre quantity of strings on the Town Hall stage.

With almost 200 virile voices of the Leeds Philharmonic Chorus and Elgar Choral behind them, they never stood a chance of a realistic balance in the big choral sections, the weak sound from four cellos and two double basses making a nonsense of Elgar's scoring.
