Major League Baseball's 60 umpires struck yesterday because they
believe they will be locked out when the season begins Monday.
Baseball staffed yesterday's exhibition games with amateur umpires,
and is ready to continue in that mode.
Negotiations broke down at 2:45 yesterday morning, and no
further sessions had been scheduled as of early last night. Richie
Phillips, general counsel for the Major League Umpires Association,
said he and the umpires will meet Monday in Chicago to discuss the
situation - the sixth time in 21 years the umpires' labor
negotiations have landed them outside the ballparks.
Both sides agree that salary is virtually the only unresolved
