Red squirrels are facing a last-ditch fight against total
extinction in England thanks to its grey cousin, a Yorkshire peer
warned yesterday.
Now there are calls for a Government-funded scheme to be set up to
reward grey squirrel killers on production of the tail of one of the
so-called "alien species".
North Yorkshire Tory peer Earl Peel declared: "They may be cuddly
but we have to kill them. There's no other way. Otherwise we will
lose the red squirrel."
The beautiful red squirrel in England is confined mainly to the
Kielder Forest in Northumberland as well as part of Cumbria with one
or two pairs in the very northern parts of the Yorkshire Dales.
