Article: Axe speed cameras to end war on drivers, say Tories

"CASH-guzzling" speed cameras that do not reduce road accident rates will be axed, the Tories promised yesterday.

If they come to power, the Tories - who have accused the Government of "waging a war on drivers" - will review all 5,000 speed cameras to gauge their effectiveness.

They claim the Treasury received more than [Pounds]15m from fines last year, with millions more going to 42 safety camera partnerships which administer the cameras and fines.

But the Government and safety camera partnerships last night said their success at reducing accidents at trouble spots was indisputable.
