GCSES may not have the historic gold-standard value of A-levels, but the fact that every 16-year-old takes them makes them just as important.

Along with the Standard Attainment Tests (SATs) results, GCSE scores, rightly or wrongly, have become a barometer of how well schools are serving pupils.

In those terms, local education authorities in Yorkshire will be taking a close look at how their schools have performed.
