Article: Obituary: Colonel Michael Roberts Former CO of Green Howards battalions

Colonel Michael Roberts, who was Commanding Officer of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Green Howards, has died, aged 93. He was the only officer to have commanded both battalions.

Born in Cornwall, Michael Williams Temple Roberts joined The Green Howards as a Second Lieutenant in August 1933. In 1938 he was serving on operations in Waziristan, and by the outbreak of the Second World War he had been promoted to Captain. He served with distinction in several major actions, including in Burma.

He was appointed Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion The Green Howards in 1948. They were on operations in Malaya from 1949 to 1952, fighting the Communist insurgency. In 1952 a decision was taken ...
