Article: Professor Richard Fletcher Former York University historian and author

RICHARD Fletcher, who has died suddenly, aged 60, had established himself as a leading authority on medieval Spain, the Anglo-Saxons and the Christianisation of Europe by the time he was appointed, in 1998, to a personal chair in the School of History at York University.

He was also particularly interested in local Yorkshire history.

He had joined the School as a lecturer in 1969, contributing to its reputation as one of the best in the country. In 1978 his thesis was published as his first book, but by then he was already greatly respected by students as a teacher they were very fortunate to have had.
