Maurice Colbeck, who has died aged 79, was told by his English teacher at Warwick Road Elementary School in Batley that he should be a writer when he grew up. Furthermore, said Mr Hermon Hall, he should write thrillers.

Maurice did become a writer. But he never wrote a thriller. Instead, he wrote humorous books and books about Yorkshire - sometimes humorous books about Yorkshire - and adventure books for children. Titles included Yorkshire, My Yorkshire, What's Funny about Yorkshire, Yorkshire Dales Stonewaller, Made in Yorkshire, Yorkshire: The Dales, Yorkshire History Makers, Yorkshire Moorlands, Queer Folk, Queer Goings On, Calendar Year and How to be a Family Man.
