A YORKSHIRE MP is standing down at the General Election after discovering he could have as little as three years to live after the onset of a rare degenerative condition.

Kevin Hughes, 52, a former coal miner who has represented Doncaster North for 13 years, found out three weeks ago that he was suffering from progressive muscular atrophy, a variant of motor neurone disease that leads to the weakening and wasting away of muscles.

Last night he said he was "completely devastated".
