AIR pollution is worsening in the centre of one of Yorkshire's most congested cities as motorists avoid a ring road aimed at reducing tailbacks.

Drivers are opting to travel through the heart of York to avoid the queues along a notorious stretch of the A1237 which runs across the northern edge of the city.

Up to two-fifths of all vehicles in the centre of York are estimated to be heading through the city in the hope of avoiding tailbacks on the outskirts, causing rising levels of air pollution.
