THERE are still people in football who insist that the squad
England took to Mexico in 1970 was better than the one which had won
the Jules Rimet trophy four years earlier and that only the ultimate
winners of the tournament - Brazil - had a better team.
That latter point was proved when the two teams met in a group
match and Brazil won 1-0 with a goal made by Pele for Jairzinho. That
was the game in which Gordon Banks made the save from a header by
Pele that is still spoken of in hushed tones. It was also the game in
which Pele and Bobby Moore gave performances of sublime quality and
memorably swapped shirts afterwards.
