COUNCILLORS in Hull last night backed a call to continue giving
every primary pupil in the city a free school meal.
Hull's Labour council became the first in England to offer free
meals to all primary age children when a pilot scheme began in 2004.
The [Pounds]3.5m pilot scheme is due to end next May but its
future was plunged into uncertainty when the new Liberal Democrat
administration announced plans to scrap it.
But after a council meeting yesterday, Labour claimed victory as
councillors voted 29 to 25 in favour of reaffirming the policy on
healthy and free school meals "as a way of ensuring universal
benefits throughout the city".
