Bjorn Borg's comeback bid has taken two jolts in the past 24
hours - on the court and on the home front.
Borg, 34, was soundly defeated Tuesday by Jordi Arrese in his
first tournament match in eight years. Then he learned this morning
that his wife, Loredana Berte, had been hospitalized in Milan after
taking barbiturates in an apparent suicide attempt. Berte, a
39-year-old pop singer, was reported out of danger after doctors
pumped her stomach.
Firemen broke down the door of Berte's apartment about dawn
after being summoned by a servant, said Letizia Cecotti, of the
Milan police.
In February 1989, Borg was hospitalized and had his stomach
pumped. Italian media called it a suicide ...
