Woolworths named as last bar to [Pounds]15m regeneration hopes

A NATIONAL company is the only objector to a [Pounds]15m redevelopment scheme regarded as the "last major piece in the jigsaw" to compete the regeneration of an historic city.

The derelict area to the west of Ripon Market Place was visited by the Prince of Wales in 1994 and led to a 147-page report from his Institute of Architecture on how the city could be improved.

Now the land is earmarked for a supermarket, three shops, 21 apartments, parking for 180 cars and a link road. But a Government- appointed inspector is considering an application for a compulsory purchase order on land in 83 different ownerships.
