Article: Dairy threatens legal action over European ban

A British dairy threatened legal action against the European Commission last night after sales of its cheese were banned across Europe.

The Commission said Bowland Dairies had breached "a whole series" of European Union food safety laws - and accused Britain's food safety authority of doing nothing about it.

The Commission's call for the unprecedented ban was approved by food safety experts representing EU member states. Britain abstained and insisted it had enforced "corrective measures" at Bowland Dairies in Nelson, Lancashire.
