A SUPERMARKET chain is forced to import French free-range eggs due to a shortage of British supplies.

Somerfield said yesterday it could no longer source enough domestically-produced free-range eggs to meet demand.

The shortage comes less than a fortnight after a Government decision to investigate alleged mislabelling of eggs as some non- free-range eggs may have been marked as free-range in an illegal practice.

The investigation relates to one per cent of the three billion free-range eggs produced each year in the UK - around 30 million eggs - although this could turn out to be a conservative figure. These have now been taken off all supermarket ...
