"If ever there was a building that had a soul, this is it,"
said Isaac Stern, standing in Carnegie Hall tonight and gesturing at
the building around him.
Placido Domingo was equally enthusiastic. "This building is a
blessing," he said simply.
What Domingo said he likes most about Carnegie Hall,
celebrating its centennial with a gala to end all galas, is the way
it sounds. "If the acoustics aren't right," he said, "it doesn't
matter how good your voice is."
Domingo, who first sang at Carnegie Hall in 1966, spoke during
the intermission of the first concert in a celebration featuring so
many great musicians that it had to be broken into two concerts. A
