THE last of North Yorkshire's district councils has come out in
favour of keeping the current two tiers of local government.
However, Richmondshire Council said it was committed to "working
wholeheartedly" however local government in North Yorkshire is run in
the future, adding that the ultimate decision would be made by
central government.
The county council announced plans for a unitary bid in January
and claims restructuring would cost [Pounds]13.5m to set up and save
taxpayers [Pounds]14m a year.
The move is opposed by the North Yorkshire District Councils
Network - made up of the county's six district councils other than
Richmondshire.
