Article: Autism more common than first thought

CAMPAIGNERS have urged better care of people with autism after a new study found the condition could be more common than previously believed.

Specialists based in Cambridge looked at some 12,000 youngsters at schools in the area between 2001 and 2004, discovering the incidence of youngsters with autism and its related conditions was one in 58 - significantly higher than the accepted level of about one in 100.

The figure would translate to more than 200,000 youngsters nationwide.

Scientists remain baffled by the causes of autism despite extensive research.
