BY 9am, Richard Vautrey has already seen eight patients. They arrive in a steady stream, the complaints ranging from back pain and flu to asthma and multiple sclerosis.

It will be another nine hours before he clocks off, during which time he will see more than 30 patients. Then there is the mountain of paperwork, telephone consultations and day-to-day business of running a hectic surgery to squeeze in.

Such is the life of a modern GP. According to the British Medical Association (BMA), there are roughly 1,600 people in the UK for every GP, and each family doctor carries out nearly 7,000 consultations each year.
