After spending much of the past 21/2 weeks doing everything he could to alienate himself from the New York Yankees -- and by all accounts succeeding -- third baseman Alex Rodriguez took his brief flirtation with free agency in a wholly unexpected direction, initiating contract talks with his former employers that could result in Rodriguez's return to the Bronx.

"After spending time with [wife] Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks," Rodriguez said in a posting on his Web site with a timestamp of 3:27 p.m. yesterday, "it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization."
