Like their customers, Arlex Oil Corp. executives John W. Maloney and David Eagle are wondering whether there will be any relief this heating season from escalating oil prices.

"We don't have a clue where the pricing is headed, and can only hope that prices will stabilize or drop a bit," said Maloney, 67, majority owner of the Lexington family firm, incorporated in 1940.

One thing is certain, and that is that traders are driving up the crude oil price to record levels on world markets, said Eagle, 70, president, during an interview last week in company offices off Massachusetts Avenue near the Arlington line. "That's why this is a murky business today," he added.
