LEAVE IT TO Brian De Palma to go straight for the ugly with his
Iraq war movie, "Redacted."
Using all the modern media he could digest -- personal
camcorders, sanitized news reports, nausea-green filtered night
vision, Jihadi Web sites, French TV exposes (for some reason) -- our
greatest visual regurgitator whips up a fake documentary that's
chillingly realistic and depressingly unforgiving. It's based on a
true-life case of the murder of an Iraqi family, after the gang rape
of their adolescent daughter by American troops.
De Palma actually films the crimes discreetly (for the man who
made "Body Double" and "Scarface," anyway). What makes the film so
