I take issue with Daniel S. Greenberg's call for the abolition
of the Department of Veterans Affairs' hospital system {op-ed, May
12}. Mr. Greenberg attacks the system as a "costly anachronism," but
he ignores the fact that the VA makes significant contributions to
health care in this country.
The VA operates a national health-care delivery system for
veterans, while providing education and training opportunities for
medical personnel, many of whom ultimately staff private and
community providers. The VA also has an internationally renowned
research program and provides in-place backup to the Department of
Defense during a war or national emergency. Doing away with the VA
