IRISH superbrand Guinness was today commemorating the death of the man who made famous a pint of "the black stuff".

Arthur Guinness died at his house in Gardiner Street, north Dublin on January 23, 1803. He was 78-years-old.

Mr Guinness left behind a brewery and brand that is now famous the world over.

The brewery he bought covered four acres and consisted of a copper, a kieve, a mill, two malthouses, stabling for 12 horses and a loft to hold 200 tonnes of hay.

Today the site consists of almost 60 acres.
