Little Bold John is back.
Maryland's former thoroughbred star, slowed in recent times by
age and injury, returned to Pimlico today like a memory. With healed
legs and firm spirit, he won a $27,000 allowance race by four
lengths for his first victory in 20 months. He hadn't raced in his
home state since March 1990.
Later today, Link pulled away to take the $50,000 Woodlawn
Stakes as Jacinto Vasquez rode his fourth winner on the program.
Applause doesn't happen often at the racetrack, but it came from
a small crowd of onlookers as groom Kim Haffner walked Little Bold
John into the winner's circle. Trainer Jerry Robb patted the dark
9-year-old, and breeder Hal C.B. Claggett wore a fixed ...
