This year's Balmoral show is almost upon us and once again the King's Hall will be packed with trade stands and bustling with crowds.

Seventy years ago, however, it was a different story, for the hall was still in the early stages of construction and it was to be another year before it finally opened.

Plans to create a major indoor arena at the Balmoral Showgrounds were first put forward before World War One, but the difficulty in raising the necessary finance and the oubreak of war put the ambitious project on hold.
