Article: Treasury, RTC Ties Strained Over Report of Cooke Ouster

Already testy relations between Treasury Department and thrift officials were strained a bit more yesterday over reports that the chief of the savings and loan cleanup agency had been fired.

The report, which appeared in yesterday's New York Times, said Resolution Trust Corp. Chairman L. William Seidman had agreed to oust RTC Director David Cooke at the urging of high-ranking Bush administration officials.

Both Seidman and a spokeswoman for the Treasury denied Cooke had been fired. So did Cooke, who said he was surprised to read he had been sacked.

The report became the focus of a Senate hearing on restructuring the RTC and prompted suggestions that it came from Treasury officials ...
