Loudoun County school officials say they have been frustrated in
a two-year effort to hire black, Hispanic and other minority
educators.
Six new teachers have been hired so far to replace eight
teachers and administrators who plan to retire or resign this
summer. Of 1,248 applicants for about 30 jobs open next year, 47 are
minorities, officials said.
School officials blame the difficulty on a sharp drop in the
number of minority candidates in the past few years. They also say
the system's pay scale is not high enough to offset the area's
relatively high cost of housing for some newcomers.
