The Montgomery County Council voted yesterday to ban cigarette
sales from vending machines throughout the county, even in bars and
clubs that don't admit minors.
The ban, designed to keep cigarettes away from youths, will rank
among the nation's strictest, tobacco lobbyists said.
"That's nuts, because you're not going to find kids in bars,"
said Brennan Dawson, a spokesman for the Tobacco Institute, the
industry's main lobbying group. She said New York City and other
jurisdictions have banned cigarette vending machines from many
locations, but most jurisdictions have exempted places such as bars
where minors are prohibited by law.
