Japan's trade surplus,
a ticklish issue in relations with Washington, rose to $4.27
billion in May, triple the surplus of $1.40 billion a year earlier,
Japan's Finance Ministry said.
General Motors
is seeking SEC clearance to sell $2 billion in debt securities,
adding to a $285 million offering in December 1990, documents
disclosed. GM said the debt would be sold as needed from time to
time.
Germany's
current account slipped further into the red in May, increasing
chances that the country will report a deficit this year for the
first time since 1981, economists said.
