1. A South African diamond
The setting: Years ago Fort Hare was the only black university in
South Africa. Many of its alumni are now internationally famous -
Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo and Robert Mugabe. Today
the town of Alice is run-down with only one bookshop, and the
university, by its own admission, is "pretty neglected", but it does
boast a remarkable art gallery, De Beers Centenary Art Gallery.
What to see: More than 1,000 pieces of contemporary southern
African art, the most significant collection anywhere in South
Africa. It includes works by pioneers such as George Pemba and Gerald
