Scientists Discover Gene Linked to Marfan Syndrome; Prenatal Tests Possible

Scientists have found the gene responsible for Marfan syndrome,
the disease that affects as many as 40,000 Americans who suffer
muscular and skeletal abnormalities and in some cases, premature
death. This is also the disorder that some speculate afflicted
Abraham Lincoln.
Discovery of the gene - which appears to cause the disease when
it is defective - means that a prenatal diagnostic test to identify
carriers in the womb is now a possibility for couples with a family
history of Marfan.
It is also expected to lead to earlier diagnosis of those
suspected of having the disease and to improved treatments and
earlier treatments for sufferers who until now were diagnosed only
after they ...
