Alliance Assemblyman Kieran McCarthy said support for the motion,
which was being debated in the Assembly this morning, was a chance to
"deliver for local people" on an important issue.
He has demanded his Stormont colleagues support the SDLP proposal
"that this Assembly calls for free personal care for the elderly,
which was agreed in principle in the last Assembly, to be introduced
as a priority within a set timescale".
The Strangford MLA said that during a debate on free nursing care
for the elderly in the Assembly in 2002, he put forward an amendment
asking that it be extended to personal care also.
But 42 MLAs - from the UUP, DUP, Sinn Fein and the SDLP - voted it
down.
