By the time this column appears, Ben Bradlee will no longer be
the executive editor of The Washington Post - a retirement that
comes a bit too soon as far as I'm concerned. I was hoping that with
some more time, I'd be able to figure him out. I say that as his
subordinate, colleague and friend - one thing or another for 23
years. For many of those years, ever since Watergate certainly, I
would read magazine or newspaper profiles about Bradlee and always
the word "power" or "powerful" was mentioned. It was never true.
He was the executive editor of The Washington Post. Powerful.
He was rich. Powerful. He was a Boston Brahmin, Harvard back to the
Pleistocene era, a family name lifted from ...
