Article: The Power That Wasn't

By the time this column appears, Ben Bradlee will no longer be the executive editor of The Washington Post - a retirement that comes a bit too soon as far as I'm concerned. I was hoping that with some more time, I'd be able to figure him out. I say that as his subordinate, colleague and friend - one thing or another for 23 years. For many of those years, ever since Watergate certainly, I would read magazine or newspaper profiles about Bradlee and always the word "power" or "powerful" was mentioned. It was never true.
