Neil Henry's July 18 article "Murphy's Law Rules in Africa"
evoked (fond?) memories of Africa. However, there is a significant
difference between Murphy's Law and a "wawa" (West Africa Wins
Again). I have seen Murphy's Law work in many countries in the
world, where strikes, malfunctions or the ruling party renders all
systems in chaos. Murphy's Law is common throughout the world. Only
West Africa has the wawa, which is very different. It is another
world "gotcha."
A wawa is characterized by a response or action that is in
mind-numbing contrast to what you expected. It is incredible and
unbelievable and leaves you in slack-jawed stupefaction.
