Article: Decision to set aside outdated scheme is welcomed

The Ulster Farmers' Union has welcomed news that farmers will no
longer be required to give over 10% of their land to set-aside for
the autumn 2007 and spring 2008 sowings.
The EU-wide decision was taken by Commissioner Mariann Fischer-
Boel.
It could mean that this summer will see the final season of set-
aside, which was originally introduced to curb production at a time
when the EU was producing a "grain mountain" surplus.
With plummeting worldwide grain production, coupled with much of
this production diverting into energy crops, set-aside is now "past
its sell-by date", according to the UFU.
