Government auditors have found that the University of Michigan
made unallowable or inappropriate charges to federal research for
such expenses as the Rose Bowl and a Martin Luther King Day
celebration.
The auditors found $8.3 million in questionable expenses in
Michigan's general and administrative accounts, including $5.9
million that the university had withdrawn earlier this year. That
left about $2 million in dispute.
The findings of a draft audit conducted by the Department of
Health and Human Services makes Michigan the first public college
where government investigators have found substantial mischarges to
