Article: Metro Crime Stoppers pays out little for tips

"$ FOR TIPS," proclaims the logo on thousands of magnets stuck on business doors and filing cabinets.

"Those calling Metro Crime Stoppers might be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000," the fliers offering money for anonymous tips in unsolved crimes read.

But the local Metro Crime Stoppers isn't exactly handing out $2,000 left and right.

In all of 2002, the Baltimore-based nonprofit group paid $6,225 in rewards in the jurisdictions it serves - Baltimore city and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties, according to its tax returns, which are public record. Numbers for last year weren't available.
