Kitchen drawers take on new roles

If there's anything Zen in an American kitchen, it's the drawer.

Framed emptiness, drawers have always been defined by what is in them - junk, silverware, potholders.

No more. At the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show last month in Chicago, drawers rolled into a new state of being: the active.

Now they cook. They chill. They wash. They organize. And they do it all out of sight, with visual modesty valued by those designing and living in open-plan kitchens.
