"Restless legs syndrome" does not sound all that serious. It sounds like something that might lead to a career in tap-dancing.

But people with restless legs syndrome, or RLS, say it makes their lives miserable by disturbing their sleep, ruining their leisure time and causing a deep, aggravating pain that's hard to describe.

"It's a very, very uncomfortable ache," said Ray Garnett, 46, of West Columbia, S.C. Mr. Garnett considers himself lucky, though. He's one of about 20 restless-legs patients in the Columbia area who helped test a medication that recently won federal approval for treating the ailment.
