Even before the surprise hit "Sideways" brought national attention
to pinot noir, winemakers have been searching for more vineyards to
supply the increased demand for this grape variety.
Known to wine growers as the "heartbreak grape," pinot noir's
ornery disposition has scared off more than one winemaker over the
years. But when made well there is nothing like pinot noir - just ask
the burgundians.
As U.S. producers search desperately for more pinot noir, there is
new interest in emerging growing areas. Producers weren't always
particular. When grape growers paid no heed to the effect of warm
climate, grapes susceptible to climatic conditions failed to produce
