Gas leak shuts road for hours
PASADENA - A section of Fort Smallwood Road was closed for more
than 10 hours Monday after contractors installing fiber-optic lines
broke a gas main, county fire officials said.
About 20 people were evacuated from surrounding homes and
businesses and the road was closed between Apian Way and Duvall
Highway as a precaution, said Lt. Frank Fennell, county Fire
Department spokesman.
Though the leak occurred near Sunset Elementary School, students
weren't in any danger and the building wasn't evacuated. School buses
and parents coming to pick up their children were routed through
Riviera Beach because of the road closure, Lt. Fennell said.
